Ulysse Robichaud Ulysse is the third generation in U.J. Robichaud. The U in U.J. Robichaud stands for Ulysse. Ulysse started working with his father from a very young age. At 14, he had already left school and was hard at work in the sawmill. During his youth, he also worked at several other sawmills, both in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, but he returned to work here in Clare. He worked for a time in St George, New Brunswick at a sawmill, and at a foundry in Lunenburg. He was also in Halifax during the great Halifax explosion of 1917. It wasn't until Élisée passed away in 1948 that Ulysse really took charge of the operations. Ulysse told us stories of how oxen were used to transport the products from Meteghan to Weymouth or Pubnico. He recalled when the oxen gave way to horse drawn carts and finally to trucks. Ulysse bought the first company truck in 1952. Shortly after taking over, Ulysse moved the office to the shore side of the road. Following the move, Élisée's store was vacant until its destruction in the early 1970s. Ulysse's focus was now on the building supply aspect of the business which included the sale of windows, doors, doorframes, sashes, and other products made in the mill. Want even more?
