FAQ:
Q. How long should Minwax® Wood Finish™ be left on
the wood?
Anywhere from a few seconds to 15 minutes. The longer the stain is left on
the wood, the deeper it will penetrate. For a light tint, wipe the excess
stain off after a few minutes; for deeper, richer color, wait as long as 15
minutes.
Q. Why is it important to wipe off the excess stain?
The colorants in Minwax® Wood Finish™ are designed to be deposited in the
wood pores, not on the surface of the wood. Any pigments allowed to remain
on top of the wood will impair topcoat adhesion - causing the finish to
peel.
Q. Is it necessary to sand after the Minwax® Wood Finish™ has dried?
No. In fact, we advise against it. Sanding will result in the removal of
some of the dyes and pigments in the stained wood. Since Minwax® Wood
Finish™ does not raise the grain, no sanding is necessary before
top-coating.
Q. Does Minwax® Wood Finish™ need to be top-coated?
For added beauty and protection, we recommend topcoating all projects with a
protective clear finish such as Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane or Minwax®
Polycrylic® Protective Finish.
Q. Can Minwax® Wood Finish™ colors be mixed to create additional colors?
There may be times when a desired stain color can only be achieved by mixing
two colors. Experiment with different proportions until the desired color is
achieved. Then mix enough stain to complete the entire project to avoid
color-matching later.
Q. Why don't some woods match the colors on the Minwax® product brochures
and samples?
Wood can vary in color and pore structure even within the same species.
Because every piece of wood is unique, final stain color may vary. While our
samples are tested for accuracy, it is always best to first test Minwax®
Wood Finish™ on a small, inconspicuous spot on the project.
DIRECTIONS
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping
or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to
lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects,
especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or
other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment
such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment
and cleanup.
SURFACE PREPARATION:
Sand the wood in the direction of the grain, first
using medium grade sandpaper (#120) and working your way to fine-grade
(#220). Remove all sanding dust before staining.
Pre-treat soft or porous woods such as pine, maple, alder and birch with
Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. This will help the wood evenly absorb
stain color. Apply stain within two hours of pre-treatment.
PRODUCT PREPARATION & COLOR TESTING:
Stir stain thoroughly before and occasionally during use.
Test stain on a hidden area to verify desired color.
To lighten any color, add Minwax® Wood Finish™ 209 Natural to the mixture.
STAIN APPLICATION:
Apply Wood Finish™ in the direction of the grain with a brush or clean
cloth.
Let the stain penetrate 5 -15 minutes to ensure you achieve the desired
color.
Remove excess stain with a clean cloth. Wipe in the direction of the grain,
while blending light and dark areas to obtain uniform color.
To Darken color, apply a second coat after 4-6 hours, repeating application
directions of first coat.
Dry times may be extended due to high humidity, low temperatures or
inadequate ventilation.
CLEAR FINISH APPLICATION:
After a minimum of 8 hours, apply a clear, protective finish such as Minwax®
Fast-Drying Polyurethane, Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane or after 24 hours,
apply clear Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish.
Water cleanup clear finishes such as Minwax®
Polycrylic® Protective Finish should not be used over Minwax® Wood Finish™
Red Mahogany stain. Minwax® Wood Finish™ Pickled Oak should be top-coated
only with a water cleanup clear finish such as Minwax® Polycrylic®
Protective Finish. Do not top-coat Minwax® Wood Finish™ Pickled Oak with an
oil-based clear finish as ambering will occur.
COVERAGE: Approximately 150 sq. per quart.
CLEANUP: Use mineral spirits or paint thinner.

FAQ:
Q. What makes this Minwax® Gel Stain product
different from traditional stains such as Minwax® Wood Finish™?
As its name implies, Gel Stain has a gelled consistency. The non-drip
formula makes it an ideal choice for vertical surfaces. Because it is
thick-bodied, it stays more toward the surface of the wood, allowing greater
color control during application. In addition, Gel Stain can be applied to
non-wood surfaces, including metal and fiberglass, to give them a beautiful
wood appearance.
Q. Does Minwax® Gel Stain need to be top-coated?
For added beauty and protection, we recommend topcoating all interior
projects with a protective clear finish such as Minwax® Fast Drying
Polyurethane or Minwax® Polycrylic Protective Finish. For exterior
applications, use Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane.
Q. What's the best way to apply Gel Stain to a fiberglass door?
Fiberglass is non-porous and won't absorb the stain the way a wood surface
does. So, it's best to apply Gel Stain with a bristle brush. Excess Stain
should be evened out with the brush - not wiped away with a rag. See
application instructions on this website.
Q. Should Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner be used with Gel Stain?
Yes, if the wood being stained is soft or porous. Soft or porous woods, such
as pine or aspen, tend to absorb stains unevenly. Before using Gel Stain on
soft or porous woods, Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner should be applied to ensure
even stain penetration.
DIRECTIONS
WOOD SURFACE DIRECTIONS:
SURFACE PREPARATION:
Make sure the surface is clean and free of dirt, grease and old coatings.
To help ensure even stain color penetration and beautiful results, pre-treat
soft or porous woods such as pine, maple, alder and birch with Minwax®
Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner.
Apply Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner, allow to penetrate for 5-15
minutes, then wipe off excess. Apply Minwax® Gel Stain within 2 hours of
pretreatment.
STAIN APPLICATION:
Before use and occasionally throughout project, stir Minwax® Gel Stain until
creamy.
Test stain on hidden area to verify desired color.
Apply a liberal amount of Minwax® Gel Stain evenly with a brush or rag. Wait
3 minutes and, using a clean rag, wipe with the wood grain to remove the
excess. Allow to dry 8 to 10 hours.
To darken the color, apply additional coats of Minwax® Gel Stain following
the instructions above. Allow the stain to dry 8 to 10 hours between coats.
CLEAR FINISH APPLICATION:
After 24 hours, apply a Minwax® protective clear finish. For interior wood
use Minwax® Fast Drying Polyurethane or Minwax® Polycrylic Protective
Finish. For exterior use we recommend Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane.
FIBERGLASS DOORS DIRECTIONS:
For ease of staining and finishing we recommended that you finish the door
before installation. If you are finishing a pre-hung door, allow enough time
in each of the application steps for the door to dry (at least 6 to 8 hours)
to avoid sticking. The door should not be closed during the drying/curing
process.
SURFACE PREPARATION:
Make sure the door surface is free of all dirt and foreign matter. Use a rag
moistened with mineral spirits to remove dirt and scuff marks left on the
door during shipping and handling.
Before applying, stir Minwax® Gel Stain to break up its gel consistency.
Then, reseal the container and shake Gel Stain vigorously for at least 30
seconds. This will thin Gel Stain into a syrup-like consistency.
STAIN APPLICATION:
Test stain on hidden area to verify desired color.
Using a high quality natural bristle brush, spread a thin, even coat over
the entire surface, starting with the raised panel sections. Always make
final brush strokes in the direction of the embossed grain.
Minwax® Gel Stain remains brushable for an extended period of time. Areas of
heavier coats should be evened out before moving to a new section.
Gel Stain, while wet, is easily removed with a rag moistened with mineral
spirits.
Allow stain to dry approximately 6 to 8 hours.
To darken the color, apply additional coats of Gel Stain by following the
instructions above. Allow approximately 6 to 8 hours between coats for the
stain to dry.
METAL DOORS DIRECTIONS:
SURFACE PREPARATION:
You will need: a graining tool, clean, dry, lint-free cloths, and clean, dry
synthetic brushes. (Practice with the graining tool on a piece of scrap
following the instructions in Step 3 until you feel comfortable using it)
Most metal doors come already primed, but usually not in the color you
should be starting with.
Select an oil-based base coat tinted to match the light tone in the wood
you're trying to create.
Apply a thin layer of the base coat paint to the entire door and allow it to
dry thoroughly.
Then, mask all areas, such as glass, that you do not wish to stain and
remove all hardware and doorknobs. Clean the surface with a cloth dampened
with mineral spirits to remove all dust, grease and dirt.
STAIN APPLICATION:
Plan to work on the door in separate vertical and horizontal sections. Mask
off the horizontal sections as you work on the vertical sections. The
vertical sections need to be masked off when working on the horizontal
sections. Each section must be completely dry before either removing or
applying masking tape.
Select a Minwax® Gel Stain color that corresponds to the darkest color of
the wood grain you are trying to create.
Test stain on hidden area to verify desired color.
Apply a thin, even coat of Gel Stain to a section using a natural bristle
brush or a soft, lint-free cloth. Apply in the direction of the grain you
intend to create.
GRAINING:
While the Gel Stain is wet, use a graining tool to create a wood grain
pattern.
Apply downward pressure while moving the graining tool across the section at
a constant speed. Use a long, steady, non-stop stroke -- rocking the tool
one rotation as you move from beginning to end. Keep the graining tool clean
by wiping it often with a rag or paper towel between strokes.
Repeat the above steps section by section.
If you are not satisfied with any given attempt, either wipe the surface
clean or re-brush the area and start over again. Wet or tacky Gel Stain can
be removed easily with a rag moistened with mineral spirits.
To complete the graining process, wait until the first coat of Minwax® Gel
Stain is completely dry (24-48 hours), then apply a second coat of Gel Stain
with a natural bristle brush in the direction of the grain pattern created.
Work section by section as you did before. There is no need to mask off any
sections.
While the Gel Stain is wet, use a clean, dry synthetic brush to remove the
excess stain and create a uniform look. Use long brush strokes in the
direction of the grain and remove the Gel Stain from the brush as it begins
to accumulate with paper towels or a rag. The amount of Gel Stain left on
will determine the depth of color.
Helpful Hints: On metal doors, use masking tape to mask off areas where
sections meet. Let the section dry to the touch before working on a section
next to it. This will ensure a clean, straight edge where panels meet.
CLEAR FINISH APPLICATION: (Fiberglass and Metal Doors)
Be sure to apply a protective clear finish such as Minwax® Fast Drying
Polyurethane for interior use or Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane for
exterior applications.
Apply the oil-based protective clear finish using a natural bristle brush
following the label directions. Remember to start with the raised panel
sections and make final brush strokes in the direction of the embossed
grain. Allow the finish to dry (at least 6 hours) before installing (or
closing) the door to avoid sticking.
Do not apply a protective clear finish if the last coat of Minwax® Gel Stain
can be removed with a rag moistened with mineral spirits.
Every 12-24 months, apply a coat of protective clear finish to keep the door
looking beautiful.
COVERAGE: Approximately 200 sq. ft. per quart.
CLEANUP: Use mineral spirits or paint thinner.

White Wash Pickling Stain
FAQ:
Q. What is the advantage to using a water-based
stain?
Water based stains have little odor, dry quickly and clean up with soap and
water. Projects can often be completed in one day.
Q. Will Minwax® Water Based Wood Stain raise the
grain of the wood?
As long as Minwax® Water Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is used prior to
staining, Water Based Wood Stain will not raise the wood grain.
Q. How long should Minwax® Water Based Wood Stain be left on wood?
Water-based stain dries very quickly. It should be allowed to penetrate no
more than three minutes before wiping away the excess.
Q. Should Minwax® Water Based Wood Stain be used on floors?
No. Water-based stains dry very quickly, making them difficult to apply
evenly over large surfaces. For very large areas such as floors, we
recommend an oil-based product such as Minwax® Wood Finish™ Stain.
Q: What is a tint base?
Minwax® Water Based Wood Stain comes in two tint bases—Clear Tint Base and
White Tint Base—that are used to make 50 different stain colors. A tint base
is brought to the paint counter at the home center or hardware store for
color mixing, similar to the way paint is mixed.
Q. What is White Wash Pickling Stain?
It is a Water Based Wood Stain that adds a subtle shade of white color to
wood while allowing the natural grain to show through. Unlike the Clear and
White Tint Bases, the White Wash Pickling Stain does not require mixing and
is ready to use right out of the can.
Q: Which clear protective topcoat should be used over Minwax® Water Based
Wood Stain?
We recommend Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish for a crystal-clear
topcoat that will not alter the appearance of the stain color. For a warmer,
slightly amber finish over wood tones, Minwax® Water Based Oil-Modified
Polyurethane is recommended.
DIRECTIONS:
Sand the wood in the direction of the grain, first using medium-grade
sandpaper (#120) working your way to fine-grade sandpaper (#220). Do Not Use
Steel Wool. Remove all sanding dust.
Apply Minwax® Water Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner and allow to penetrate
1-5 minutes. This will help ensure even stain color penetration and reduce
grain raising on soft and hard woods. Remove excess with a clean cloth.
For best results, wait 15-30 minutes before lightly sanding the surface with
a fine-grade sandpaper. This will help smooth any raised grain. Remove all
sanding dust.
STAIN APPLICATION:
Stir contents thoroughly before and during use.
Test stain on a hidden area to verify desired color.
When working with more than one can, we recommend mixing together the
contents of the cans to ensure color consistency.
Apply stain with a synthetic bristle brush, foam brush, staining pad or rag.
Allow stain to penetrate no longer than 3 minutes.
While stain is still wet, remove excess with clean cloth lightly dampened
with stain. Wipe in the direction of the grain using light to medium
pressure to achieve even stain color.
Note: Any uneven color penetration can be blended. Rewet the surface with
more stain and lightly rub the stain into the surface, blending light and
dark areas.
To increase color intensity, apply a second coat after 2 hours- repeating
directions for application of first coat. Heavier application, lower
temperature, and or higher humidity will extend drying time. Do not apply
below 55°F.
CLEAR FINISH APPLICATION:
Allow stain to dry a minimum of 3 hours before applying a clear protective
finish. For a durable, crystal clear, ultra-fast drying finish we recommend
Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish. Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane or
Minwax® Wipe-On Poly can also be used over Water Based Wood Stain.
Note: Minwax® Water Based Wood Stain is not recommended for use on floors.

FAQ:
Q. What is the advantage of PolyShades®?
PolyShades® combines stain for beautiful color with polyurethane for tough
protection in one product. It is an ideal choice for those who want to save
the time involved in staining with one product and protecting with another.
Q. Should Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner be used as a pretreatment prior
to PolyShades®?
Yes, if the wood being stained is soft or porous. Soft or porous woods, such
as pine or aspen, tend to absorb stain unevenly. Before using PolyShades® on
soft or porous woods, Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner should be applied to ensure
even stain penetration.
Q. Can PolyShades® be applied over an existing finish?
Yes, as long as the previous finish is not lacquer or shellac. Be sure to
test the selected color on a hidden spot to see how it will look over the
original finish. To prepare the surface, make sure that the finish is clean
and has had all wax and polish removed. Then lightly sand with #180 or #220
sandpaper. The surface is now ready to be coated with PolyShades®.
Q. Can Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane or Wipe-On Poly be applied over
PolyShades®?
Yes. Since PolyShades® contains polyurethane, additional protection, without
added color, can be provided with a clear coat of Minwax® Fast-Drying
Polyurethane or Wipe-On Poly over the last coat of PolyShades®.
Q. Can PolyShades® be used on floors?
PolyShades® is not recommended for use on floors. Instead, stain with Minwax®
Wood Finish™ and topcoat with Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for
Floors or Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane.
DIRECTIONS:
Sand raw wood smooth. Sand old finishes lightly to aid adhesion. Remove all
sanding dust.
Surface must be dry and free from wax, grease, and dust. Do not use over
paint, lacquer, shellac, polishes or products containing stearates.
Pre-treat raw soft or porous woods, such as pine and alder, with Minwax®
Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. This will help the wood absorb the stain color
more evenly. Apply stain within two hours of pre-treatment.
STAIN APPLICATION:
Stir well before and occasionally during use.
Test stain on a hidden area to verify desired color.
Two coats are recommended for maximum beauty and protection.
Brush on a THIN, EVEN COAT in the direction of the grain. Be sure to
maintain a wet edge.
Let dry 6 hours or more, then rub surface with fine steel wool (grade 000
and finer). Remove all dust.
Brush on a second THIN coat.
You may apply more than two coats if you want to deepen the color.
COVERAGE: Approximately 120-150 square feet per
quart.
CLEANUP: Use mineral spirits or paint thinner.

FAQ:
Q. What is
the best way to select a sheen?
Sheen choice is a personal preference. Satin sheens reflect less light and
gloss sheens reflect more light.
Q. Is one sheen more durable than the others?
No. The additives that distinguish satin from semi-gloss and gloss do not
compromise the durability of the finish.
Q. What can be done to avoid bubbles in the finish?
There are four ways. First, stir, don't shake, the can. Second, use a
high-quality, natural bristle brush. Third, work the finish into the wood,
but don't create excess foam. Fourth, "tip-off" the finish before stopping,
carefully running the brush at a 45-degree angle the length of each board in
one unbroken movement. This will burst and smooth out any bubbles that may
have been created.
Q. Should Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane be sanded between coats?
Yes. A light sanding (#220 sandpaper) will remove any fine particles of dust
that have settled on the finish while it was still wet. Light sanding also
helps abrade the surface, improving intercoat adhesion.
Q. Why does Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane sometimes take longer to dry
than the instructions indicate?
The drying time is affected by the amount of moisture in the air, the air
temperature and the thickness of the coats. When humidity is high,
temperature is low, or coats are thick, it takes longer for the film to dry.
Q. What is the best way to determine how many coats of Minwax® Fast-Drying
Polyurethane to apply?
If you look closely at the wood in bright, direct light, you should not be
able to detect any dry spots. If you do, an additional coat is necessary to
protect the wood.
Q. Does Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane need to be waxed?
No. Wax does provide an extra layer of protection, but it will prevent you
from applying an additional coat of Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane in the
future without first removing the wax. Instead, we recommend using Minwax®
Wood Cleaner to keep wood clean and looking beautiful.
DIRECTIONS:
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may

DIRECTIONS:
Surface must be dry and free of old finishes in poor condition, paint, wax,
grease, polish, dirt or other foreign matter.
Sand to obtain a smooth uniform surface. Remove all dust with a cloth
dampened with mineral spirits.
Stir Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane before and during use to eliminate
settling on the bottom of the can. Stir in such a manner as to rotate the
product from the bottom to the top of the can. NEVER SHAKE.
Apply a THIN coat of Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane using a high-quality
natural or foam brush.
Let dry 4-6 hours. Then lightly sand entire surface with fine sandpaper (220
grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion. Remove all dust.
Apply second coat. If third coat is desired, repeat step 5 before
application.
After final coat, allow 24 hours before light use.
When used on wooden floors, use a lambs wool or synthetic pad applicator or
natural bristle brush and maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks. For
maximum durability, we recommend three coats. Avoid heavy traffic and
replacing of furniture for 72 hours after final coat. When replacing
furniture, do not slide. Do not install rugs or clean floors for 7 days.
CLEAN-UP: For easy clean-up use mineral spirits or paint thinner.
COVERAGE: Approximately 125 square feet per quart.
Note: Above dry times are based on good ventilation, temperature of 77°F and
50% relative humidity. Lower temperature, higher humidity, lack of air
movement or application of thick coats will extend drying times. Always test
tackiness between coats. Do not sand or re-coat when surface is tacky.
Slight ambering may be experienced when Polyurethane is applied over
light-colored wood surfaces. Always spot test on an inconspicuous area to
ensure satisfactory results. For light-colored wood surfaces, we recommend
protecting with Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish.

FAQ:
Q. What is the benefit of using Minwax® Wipe-On Poly
versus a traditional polyurethane?
Minwax® Wipe-On Poly is easily applied with a cloth, without any drips or
brush marks. It is the perfect choice for furniture, interior doors, trim
and other woodwork.
Q. Can Minwax® Wipe-On Poly be used on floors?
Minwax® Wipe-On Poly provides a durable layer of topcoat protection but it
is thinner than regular polyurethanes. It can be used on floors to touch up
small areas that are worn or scratched. For new floors or floors that need
to be refinished, Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane or Minwax® Super
Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors should be used.
Q. How is Minwax® Wipe-On Poly applied?
Minwax® Wipe-On Poly is easily applied by hand, using a soft, lint-free
cloth. Put a liberal amount on a clean cloth and rub into the wood. Since it
is applied with a cloth, there is no need to worry about drips or brush
marks.
Q. Can Minwax® Wipe-On Poly be applied over Minwax® Wood Finish™ or other
stains?
Yes. Minwax® Wipe-On Poly is a great way to protect finished or unfinished
wood. Be sure to allow wood that has been stained to dry completely before
topcoating with Minwax® Wipe-On Poly.
Q. Should Minwax® Wipe-On Poly be sanded between coats?
Yes. A light sanding with very fine sandpaper (#220) or fine steel wool will
remove any fine particles of dust that may have settled on the finish while
it was wet. Allow Minwax® Wipe-On Poly to dry 2-3 hours before applying the
next coat. If a third coat is desired, repeat the same procedure.

FAQ:
Q: What is
Minwax® Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane?
Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane is a clear, ultra fast-drying finish
that combines superior durability with the warmth and beauty of traditional
polyurethane. Because it's water-based, it has little odor and cleans up
easily with warm water.
Q: Where can I use Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane?
Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane is ideal for use on all interior bare
or stained wood surfaces including furniture, cabinets, doors and floors. It
can be applied over oil-based stains like Minwax® Wood Finish™ or Minwax®
Gel Stain. It also can be applied over Minwax® Water Based Wood Stain wood
tones, provided the stain has dried completely.
Q: How many coats do I need to apply?
Three coats are recommended.
Q: Can I mix Minwax® Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane with Minwax®
Fast-Drying Polyurethane?
No. The oil-based and water-based products are not compatible and they
should not be mixed together. However, the results are the same—a beautiful,
durable finish!
Q: Can I apply Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane over Fast-Drying
Polyurethane or vice versa?
Yes. The two products can be applied over each other as long as the first
has fully cured. Follow the directions for the product you are using. Be
sure to apply each coat with only one product. Do not finish part of a
surface with one topcoat and part with the other as this could result in a
uneven appearance across the surface of the wood.
Q: What is the V.O.C. level of Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane?
Water Based Polyurethane has a maximum V.O.C. of 275 g/L.
DIRECTIONS:
WARNING! Removal of old
paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that
contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other
adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women.
Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use
of proper protective equipment such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH
approved) and proper containment and cleanup.
Surface must be dry and free of old finishes in poor condition, paint, wax,
grease, polish, dirt or other foreign matter.
Sand to obtain a smooth, uniform surface. Do not use steel wool. Remove all
sanding dust. Thoroughly wipe clean with a damp cloth. Allow to dry
completely.
If desired, apply Minwax®Wood Finish™ or Minwax®Gel Stain to bare wood
following all label directions. Wait 8 hours before applying Water Based
Polyurethane over stain.
Stir Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane before and during use to eliminate
settling on the bottom of the can. Stir in such a manner as to rotate the
product from the bottom to the top of the can. NEVER SHAKE.
Apply a THIN coat of Water Based Polyurethane using a high quality synthetic
bristle brush or foam brush.
Let dry 2 hours. Then lightly sand entire surface with fine sandpaper (220
grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion. Remove all dust.
Apply a second coat. Water Based Polyurethane requires a third coat - repeat
step 6 before application.
After final coat, allow 24 hours before light use.
When used on wood floors, use a lambswool or synthetic pad applicator and
maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks. For maximum durability, three coats
are required. Avoid heavy traffic and replacing of furniture for 72 hours
after the final coat. When replacing furniture, do not slide. Do not install
rugs or clean floors for 7 days.
Clean-Up: Clean application tools with warm water immediately after use.
Coverage: Approximately 125 square feet per quart.
Storage: Store at room temperature. Keep from freezing.
Note: Above dry times and coverage rates are based on good ventilation,
temperature of 77F and 50% relative humidity. Lower temperature, higher
humidity, lack of ventilation or application of thick coats will extend dry
time. Always test tackiness between coats. Do not sand or re-coat when
surface is tacky. Slight ambering may be experienced when polyurethane is
applied over light-colored wood surfaces. Always spot test on an
inconspicuous area to ensure satisfactory results.
POLYCRYLIC PROTECTIVE FINISH

FAQ:
Q. Why does
Minwax® Polycrylic® Protective Finish appear milky in the can?
The milk-white appearance is caused by the scattering and reflection of
light striking the liquid and the particles suspended in it. The slight
haziness disappears on the wood leaving a clear finish.
Q. Can Polycrylic® be used over Minwax® Wood Finish™ stains?
Yes, provided the Wood Finish™ has dried completely, which generally takes
24 hours. The one exception is over Wood Finish™ Red Mahogany Stain.
Polycrylic® and Red Mahogany are not compatible.
Q. When applying Polycrylic® over wood that has not been sealed with a wood
stain, how can grain raising be minimized?
Sand the wood prior to applying Polycrylic®. Before the final sanding,
moisten the wood with a rag or sponge dipped in water. Allow the wood to
dry, then sand off the raised grain with #220 sandpaper. After wiping off
the dust, apply Polycrylic®.
Q. Can Polycrylic® Protective Finish be used over paint and wall coverings?
Yes. Polycrylic® may be applied over latex and oil-based paints and
well-bonded wall coverings. Because slight ambering may occur, spot test on
an inconspicuous area and let dry to ensure satisfactory results.
Q. Should Polycrylic® be sanded between coats?
Yes. A light sanding (#220 sandpaper) will remove any fine particles of dust
which settle on the finish while it is still wet. Light sanding also helps
abrade the surface, improving intercoat adhesion.
Q. Can steel wool be used in place of fine sandpaper?
No. Since steel wool and water can cause rust, steel wool should be avoided
around all water-based wood finishing products. A stray strand lodged in the
surface could leave an unsightly stain in the wood.
Q. Will water damage Polycrylic® after it has dried?
Once the resins have dried and hardened they cannot be re-dissolved by
water. The dry film resists damage from water and household spills.
DIRECTIONS:
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may
generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may
cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children

FAQ:
Q. How does Helmsman® Spar Urethane differ from other polyurethanes?
Helmsman® contains special ultraviolet absorbers to help protect wood from
the graying and fading effects of the sun. Helmsman® also contains special
oils that allow it to expand and contract with seasonal temperatures
changes.
Q. Can Helmsman® be used on interior floors?
No. Helmsman® is formulated to expand and contract with temperature changes.
Because it is flexible, it is not suitable for use on floors. Floors require
a harder finish such as Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane, Minwax® Super
Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors or Minwax® Water-Based Polyurethane for
Floors.
Q. Should Helmsman® Spar Urethane be applied to exterior furniture?
Yes, but no clear exterior finish will permanently protect wood against
direct sun, snow, ice and rain. Be sure to check the finish annually to
determine if it needs to be recoated. If the finish warrants, apply an
additional coat of Helmsman® according to the label directions.
Q. Is Helmsman® suitable for decks and fences?
No. Decks and fences have special requirements for protection against the
elements. Use an exterior waterproofing product such as Thompson's®
WaterSeal® Waterproofer Plus Clear Wood Protector.

Minwax® Water-Based Polyurethane for Floors Base Coat seals the wood grain,

not required. Apply Water Based Polyurethane for Floors directly over stain.
FAQ:
Q. What is the purpose of Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane Base Coat?
The Base Coat seals the wood to prevent a tannin reaction between it and
Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors. Many water-based finishes have
higher pH levels than oil-based finishes. When they come in contact with the
tannins that exist naturally in wood, a discoloration can occur. Water Based
Polyurethane Base Coat must be applied on unstained floors prior to applying
and Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors.
Applying a base coat may be unfamiliar to DIYers but not to flooring
contractors. When using water-based floor finishes, professionals almost
always apply a base coat.
Q. How is Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane Base Coat different from Minwax®
Sanding Sealer?
Water Based Polyurethane Base Coat is formulated for use with Minwax® Water
Based Polyurethane for Floors. Its main function is to seal the wood,
preventing a tannin reaction. Applying Water Based Polyurethane Base Coat is
required on all unstained floors.
Water Based Polyurethane Base Coat should never be sanded. Doing so can
expose bare wood and a tannin reaction may result.
In contrast, Minwax® Sanding Sealer is formulated for use with Minwax®
Super-Fast Drying Polyurethane for Floors. Its function is to provide a
first coat that is then sanded smooth to remove any imperfections.
Q. Should Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane Base Coat be used over stain?
Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane Base Coat is not recommended over stained
floors. Stains seal the wood, preventing a tannin reaction, so the Base Coat
is not necessary. Also, better adhesion is attained when Water Based
Polyurethane for floors is applied directly over the stain.
DIRECTIONS:
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may
generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may
cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children
or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous
substances requires the use of proper protective equipment such as a
properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and
cleanup.
Step 1: Prepare Floor
Floors that need a complete refinishing: Sand floor to bare wood to remove
existing stain and finish, first using coarse sandpaper (40-60 grit) working
to medium-grade (80 grit). Continue floor preparation by following sanding
instructions for New Wood Floors, below.
New Wood Floors: Sand floor using 100 grit sandpaper. Follow with 120 grit
sandpaper. Do not use steel wool. Remove all sanding dust. Thoroughly wipe
floor with a clean cloth dampened with water or mineral spirits. Allow to
dry completely.
Step 2: Apply Base Coat
Base Coat should be at room temperature for best results. Gently invert
container 3 – 4 times before use. Apply a thin coat of Minwax® Water Based
Polyurethane Base Coat using a synthetic pad applicator. Maintain a wet edge
to avoid lap marks. Allow to dry for 2 hours. DO NOT SAND.
Note: On white oak floors, a second coat of Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane
Base Coat should be applied.

Apply Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors following label
directions.
CLEAN-UP: Clean application tools with warm water immediately after use.
COVERAGE RATE: Approximately 400 - 500 square feet per gallon.

Q. Can I Sand and Recoat a floor that was previously finished with an
oil-based polyurethane?
Yes, as long as the floor is prepared following the label directions.
Q. How many coats do I need to apply to protect my floor?
Three coats of Water Based Polyurethane for Floors are recommended.
Additional coats may be applied for added durability.
Q. Is sanding required between coats?
Water Based Polyurethane for Floors should be sanded between the last two
coats only. This process is common with water-based floor finishes,
especially those available to professional contractors. Water-based
finishes, such as Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors, are applied
in very thin coats. And, each time you sand, you remove some of the finish.
So, sanding is not recommended except before the final coat.
Q. Can Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors be used over oil-based
Minwax stains?
Yes. Water Based Polyurethane for Floors has been formulated to work within
the Minwax® system. For best results, we recommend staining with Minwax®
Wood Finish™ stain. Make sure that the stain has cured completely before
applying Water Based Polyurethane for Floors.
Q. Can Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors be applied over Minwax®
Water Based Stains?
Technically yes, but it is not recommended because water-based stains are
not well suited for use on floors. Water-based stains dry very quickly,
making them difficult to apply evenly, without lap marks, over large
surfaces. For very large surface areas, such as floors, we recommend using
an oil-based product such as Minwax® Wood Finish™ stain.
DIRECTIONS:
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may
generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may
cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children
or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous
substances requires the use of proper protective equipment such as a
properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and
cleanup.
Sand floor as appropriate for the type of floor finishing project. Carefully
follow label directions and the directions for the sander that you are
using.
Remove all sanding dust. Thoroughly wipe floor with a clean damp cloth.
Seal the floor prior to applying Water Based Polyurethane for Floors. If
added color is desired, apply Minwax® Wood Finish™ stain following label
application directions. To seal the floor without adding color, apply Minwax®
Water Based Polyurethane for Floors Base Coat or Minwax® Wood Finish™
Natural Stain following label directions. Both options seal the wood grain,
preventing a tannin reaction (discoloration) between the wood and Minwax®
Water Based Polyurethane for Floors.
Gently invert Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors 10-12 times before
and occasionally during use. Product should be at room temperature for best
results. Note: the product will appear cloudy in the container but dries
clear.
Apply a thin coat using a new synthetic pad or lambswool applicator.
Maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
Allow finish to dry at least 2 hours. (If allowed to dry for more than 24
hours, sand lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. Do not scuff through to bare
wood).
Apply a second coat following steps 4 through 6 above.
Sand lightly with 220 grit sandpaper.
Apply a third coat following steps 4 through 6 above.
For added protection, more coats may be applied, but sand prior to final
coat only.
Dry Time: Floor will bear light foot traffic in 24 hours. Do not expose
finish to rugs, cleaners, spills, or heavy traffic for one week. Dry times
are based on conditions of 77° F and 50% relative humidity. Lower
temperature, higher humidity, application of thick coats or poor ventilation
will increase dry times.
Cleanup: Clean application tools with warm water immediately after use.
Coverage: Approximately 500-600 square feet per gallon
Storage: Store at room temperature. Keep from freezing.
Notes: Slight ambering may be experienced when product is applied over
light-colored surfaces. Always spot test on an inconspicuous area to ensure
satisfactory results. Avoid use over white or pastel stains. Do not use
steel wool.
To clean floors protected with Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors,
use a gentle cleaner such as Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner.

FAQ:
Q. What is the difference between Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for
Floors and Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane?
Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors is a durable protective
finish specifically formulated for use on hardwood floors. Its professional
formula provides superior durability. Its optimized drying technology
provides a 25% faster recoat time than regular polyurethanes, and does not
require sanding between coats. It applies more easily than regular
polyurethane on floor surface, with an advanced anti-settling formula that
needs less stirring and has fewer "highs and lows", resulting in an even
sheen across the floor surface.
Q. Should Polyurethane for Floors be sanded between coats?
While it is not necessary, Polyurethane for Floors can be sanded between
coats for maximum smoothness. Allow the finish to dry 4-6 hours before
sanding. A light sanding between coats is necessary only if Polyurethane for
Floors has been allowed to dry for 12 hours or more.
Q. Can Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors be used over Minwax®
stains?
Yes, Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors has been formulated
to work within the Minwax® system. It can be used over Minwax® Wood Finish™
Stain and Minwax® Gel Stain.
Q. Can Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors be used with Minwax®
Sanding Sealer?
First the Sanding Sealer should be applied according to label directions.
After the Sanding Sealer has dried it must be sanded. Then Polyurethane for
Floors can be applied.
Q. Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors looks darker than
Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane does in the can. Will this color be the
color that ends up on the floor?
The darker color in the can is caused by certain key ingredients that give
Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors a faster dry-time and
better dispersed flattener. These special ingredients impart a darker color
to the product in the can but do not impact the product's color on the
floor.
Q. Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane says that it can be used for floors. Has
this changed?
No. While Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane can be used on floors, Minwax®
Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors has been specifically formulated
for hardwood floor surfaces. It provides application and drying benefits
that make it especially appropriate for use on floors.
Q. Do floors that have been power sanded require special treatment?
If a floor has been freshly sanded with a power floor sander, it may absorb
more finish than a piece of wood lightly sanded by hand. Because of this,
plus the wear a floor usually takes, three coats of Minwax® Super
Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors are often needed.
DIRECTIONS:
Carefully
follow label directions and the directions for the sander that you are
using.
Remove all dust, then thoroughly wipe the floor with a clean cloth dampened
with mineral spirits and allow to dry.
Before use, stir Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors to rotate
the product from the bottom to the top of the can. You will not need to stir
again if the project will be completed in one day.
Apply a thin coat using a lambswool or synthetic pad applicator, or a
natural bristle brush. Maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
Let dry at least 3-4 hours until film is no longer tacky to the touch. If
allowed to dry for more than 12 hours, sand lightly with 220 grit sandpaper,
then wipe floor with a cloth moistened with mineral spirits to remove all
dust.
Apply a second coat of Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors
following steps 4 and 5.
If the floor was not stained, apply a third coat of Minwax® Super
Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors following steps 4 and 5.
Floor will accommodate light foot traffic 24 hours after the final coat of
Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors. Avoid heavy traffic and
do not replace furniture for 72 hours after the final coat of Minwax® Super
Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors. When replacing furniture, do not slide.
Do not install rugs or clean floors for 7 days to allow finish to cure
properly. To clean floors protected by Minwax® Super Fast-Drying
Polyurethane for Floors, we recommend a gentle cleaner such as Minwax®
Hardwood Floor Cleaner.
Clean-up: For easy clean-up, use mineral spirits or paint thinner.
Coverage: Approximately 600-700 sq. ft. per gallon
Note: Above dry times are based on good ventilation, temperature of 77°F and
50% relative humidity. Lower temperature, higher humidity, lack of air
movement or application of thick coats will extend drying times. Always test
surface for tackiness between coats. Do not re-coat when surface is tacky.
Slight ambering may be experienced when polyurethane is applied over
light-colored wood surfaces. Always spot test on an inconspicuous area to
ensure satisfactory results.

FAQ:
Q. Can Minwax® High Performance Wood Filler be stained?
Staining High Performance Wood Filler is not recommended. Minwax® High
Performance Wood Filler accepts stain differently than wood does. It is
unlikely that a close color match will be achieved. For repairs that require
and exact stain match, use Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler.
Q. How is Minwax Wood Putty® different from Minwax® High Performance Wood
Filler?
Unlike Minwax® High Performance Wood Filler, Minwax Wood Putty® is a
non-hardening putty designed to cosmetically fill nail holes, joints and
other minor surface imperfections. Additionally, Minwax Wood Putty® is
color-matched to the Minwax® Wood Finish™ stain line. Minwax® High

DIRECTIONS:
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may
generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may
cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children
or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous
substances requires the use of proper protective equipment such as a
properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and
cleanup.
Area must be clean, dry and free from paint varnish, dirt, and grease. If
working with rotted or soft wood, remove loose material and apply Minwax®
High Performance Wood Hardener to strengthen wood fibers and to form a solid
base for filling.
Scoop golf ball size amount of filler into plastic lid and squeeze in a thin
3/4 inch long line of hardener from the tube. Mix thoroughly. (Mix only as
much as can be used in 15 minutes.)
Apply the mixed paste immediately to the area to be repaired. Spread on a
thin layer followed by sufficient product to fill the gap. Slightly
over-fill to allow for sanding down. Work quickly as the mixture remains
workable for about 10 minutes at room temperature. (To fill deep holes,
spread on 1/8 inch thin layers one at a time until the hole is filled.)
After approximately 20 minutes, the repair should be hard enough to be
carved and shaped using a sharp modeling knife.
Wait at least 30 minutes to sand, plane or file.
The Minwax® High Performance Wood Filler can then be painted or stained. To
stain Minwax® High Performance Wood Filler, see tips for staining Minwax®
High Performance Wood Filler inside cap sticker.
Cleanup: acetone following manufacturer's safety instructions.
Note: This product absorbs stain differently than wood. Therefore, it is
unlikely that exact color match to the original wood will be achieved.

FAQ:
Q. What kind of stain does Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler accept?
Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler has been formulated to accept all Minwax®
penetrating stains, including Minwax® Wood Finish, Minwax® Gel Stain and
Minwax® Water Based Wood Stain.
Q. Can Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler be top-coated?
Yes. Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler has been designed to work within the
Minwax® system. It can be top-coated with any Minwax® protective clear
finish, including Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane, Minwax® Polycrylic®
Protective Finish. It also can be painted.
Q. Can Stainable Wood Filler be used with a one-step stain and finish, such
as PolyShades®?
Yes, but the polyurethane in PolyShades® decreases the absorption of the
stain. The filled area may not exactly match the surrounding wood.
Q. Can Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler be used outside?
Yes. Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler can be used on exterior wood surfaces.
Q. Can Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler be used on previously stained wood?
While not ideal, it can be done. It may be difficult to match the color to
the surrounding area.
Q. Can a nail or screw be put in the repaired area?
Yes, Stainable Wood Filler dries to a hard, strong consistency that securely
holds nails and screws.
Q. How is Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler different from Minwax Wood Putty®?
Minwax Wood Putty® is designed to fill minor surface imperfections in
finished wood. It comes in ten colors to match Minwax® Wood Finish™ stains
and it does not harden. Stainable Wood Filler is designed to fill nail
holes, cracks, gouges and other defects in unfinished wood. It does not come
pre-colored. It readily accepts any Minwax® stain and, once stained, will
match the surrounding wood. Stainable Wood Filler hardens and is strong
enough to hold nails and screws.
DIRECTIONS:
Surface must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, oil and loose
particles.
Squeeze a liberal amount of Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler into the area to
be filled.
Press the filler firmly in place with a putty knife.
Fill slightly above surface to allow for sanding while minimizing
overspreading on surrounding areas.
Allow the filler to dry completely. Dry time will vary depending on depth of
area to be filled. Most common shallow repairs will dry within 2 hours.
Deeper repairs may need more than one filling and may require 2-6 hours to
dry. Let dry between fillings.
Sand filler smooth and flush to the wood.
Remove all sanding residue before staining, top coating or painting.
Cleanup: soap and water
Note: For rotted wood use Minwax®High Performance Wood Hardener to
strengthen wood fibers before applying Minwax® Stainable Wood Filler.
Note: Not recommended for use with Minwax® PolyShades®.

Usage frequency: as often as necessary

FAQ:
Q. What are the advantages of using Minwax® Wood Cleaner?
Minwax® Wood Cleaner has been exclusively formulated for use on wood
surfaces. Unlike other surface cleaners, Minwax® Wood Cleaner is designed to
clean wood surfaces without leaving a residue, which other all-purpose
cleaners may leave.
Q. Where can I use Minwax® Wood Cleaner?
Use Minwax® Wood Cleaner on finished kitchen cabinets, furniture, moldings
and any other wood surfaces which have not been waxed or oiled. Because most
shellacs contain wax, Minwax® cleaners should not be used on wood finished
with shellac. Do not use product on bare or unfinished wood.
Q. Does Minwax® Wood Cleaner need to be mixed with water?
No. It comes premixed and ready to use.
Q. What happens if Minwax® Wood Cleaner is accidentally used in excess on
oiled, waxed or raw wood surfaces?
Minwax® Wood Cleaner will not permanently damage wood. If the product is
accidentally left on a wood surface finished with wax, the finish may turn
white, as it would if water were left on it for a long period of time. If
the application of more finish does not repair the whitened areas, then
reapply the oil finish using fine steel wool.
DIRECTIONS:

FAQ:
Q. What is Minwax® Hardwood Floor Reviver
Stronger and more durable than polish, Reviver is a topcoat that restores
shine and provides a layer of protection to any unwaxed,
polyurethane-finished floor. Reviver quickly and easily renews the beauty of
hardwood floors that are dull, scratched, scuffed or showing signs of wear.
Q. How can I tell if my floor has wax on it?
Apply a few drops of water to the floor. Wait 10 minutes. If the wetted area
turns white, the floor may have a wax coating. Do not proceed with the
application of Reviver.
Q. Can Reviver be used on pre-finished hardwood floors?
No. Reviver will not adhere to pre-finished flooring. If you are unsure if
your floor is pre-finished, test Reviver on an inconspicuous area.
Q. Can Reviver be used on floors that are in very poor condition?
No. Badly damaged floors or floors that have large areas where the finish is
worn away will require a complete refinishing.
Q. How do I prepare the floor before I apply Reviver?
There is no sanding or special preparation required. Simply sweep or vacuum
the floor to remove all loose dirt. Then, wash the floor with a mild
oil-free cleaner such as Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner and allow to dry.
Q. Does Reviver need to be mixed with water?
No. Reviver is premixed and ready to use.
Q. How do I apply Reviver?
Squirt Reviver lightly in an "S" pattern directly onto the floor working one
area at a time. Then spread the Reviver with a painter's pad in the
direction of the grain and let dry.
Q. Will Reviver change the color of my floor?
No. Reviver is non-ambering. It dries quickly to a crystal clear finish.
Q. How often can I use Reviver?
Reviver can be reapplied every 3-6 months as needed.
Q. Is Reviver an oil- or water-based product?
Reviver is water-based. It is low odor, dries quickly and application tools
can be cleaned with soap and water.
DIRECTIONS:
PREPARE THE FLOOR:
Sweep or vacuum the floor to remove all loose dirt
Wash the floor with a mild oil-free cleaner such as Minwax® Hardwood Floor
Cleaner
Allow to dry completely
Test Minwax® Hardwood Floor Reviver on a small inconspicuous area of the
floor such as inside a closet to ensure adhesion and compatibility. Wax and
other ingredients in some floor polishes may cause Reviver to bead up or
prevent it from adhering to the floor
Note: Minwax® Hardwood Floor Reviver is not recommended for use over
unfinished, newly finished, waxed or oiled floors. To test for wax, apply a
few drops of water to the floor. Wait 10 minutes. If the wetted area turns
white, the floor may have a wax coating. Reviver is not designed for use on
floors that are in very poor condition. Badly damaged floors or floors that
have large areas where the finish is worn away will require a complete
refinishing.
APPLY THE COATING:
Rock the bottle several times before opening the cap. Do not shake.
Squirt Minwax® Hardwood Floor Reviver lightly in an "S" pattern directly
onto the floor in a 3 x 3 foot area using a damp painter's pad or synthetic
applicator attached to a long handle, spread Reviver across the floor.
Work in the direction of the grain using a back-and-forth motion. Keep
working in small sections until the entire floor is coated. For best
results, apply a thin, even coat. Keep airborne dust to a minimum while the
floor is wet.
ALLOW THE COATING TO DRY:
Let the finish dry at least two hours before walking lightly on the floor.
Do not walk on the floor if the surface is wet or tacky. Avoid heavy traffic
and do not replace furniture or rugs for 24 hours after application. When
replacing furniture do not slide.
Hardwood Floor Reviver can be reapplied as needed (usually about every 6
months) to keep your floor looking beautiful.
CLEAN-UP: Application tools can be easily cleaned with soap and water.

Recommended uses: hardwood floors, laminates, and pre-finished flooring
FAQ:
Q. What are the advantages of using Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner?
Minwax<® Hardwood Floor Cleaner has been exclusively formulated for use on
hardwood, laminate, and pre-finished floors. Unlike other surface cleaners,
Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner is designed to clean wood floors without
leaving a residue, which other all-purpose cleaners may leave.
Q. Can I use my Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner on finished hardwood floors,
laminates, and pre-finished flooring?
Yes. Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner can be used on surfaces such as
laminates and pre-finished floors in addition to hardwood floors.
Q. Does Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner need to be mixed with water?
No. It comes premixed and ready to use.
Q. What happens if Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner is accidentally used in
excess on oiled, waxed or raw wood surfaces?
Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner will not permanently damage wood. If the
product is accidentally left on a wood surface finished with wax or oil, the
finish may turn white, as it would if water were left on it for a long
period of time. If the application of more finish does not repair the
whitened areas, then reapply the oil finish using fine steel wool.
DIRECTIONS:
Sweep or vacuum to pick up loose dirt.
Use Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner directly from the bottle. No mixing,
diluting or rinsing is needed.
Squirt cleaner lightly in an "S" pattern directly onto floor in a 3 to 4
foot area.
Mop floor, using a damp, well wrung-out mop. Rinse mop as needed during
cleaning to remove dirt from the mop.
Note: Use Minwax® Hardwood Floor Cleaner frequently as part of your regular
cleaning routine. Use doormats and area rugs by door entries to help keep
dirt, sand and grit from entering the house. Install furniture glides to
protect against scratches and gouges.
PREPARATION
PRE-STAIN WOOD CONDITIONER This product penetrates wood, preparing the surface for even stain
penetration on soft woods such as pine, fir and spruce. Treating bare wood
with Minwax Pre-Satin Wood Conditioner helps prevent blotching and
streaking. Wood may be stained immediately after application of clear wood
conditioner.
Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood
Conditioner penetrates the grain of the wood to promote uniform acceptance
of wood stain. Minwax®Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner helps prevent streaking and
blotching to help ensure a beautiful, even stain. It is specifically
designed to condition wood before staining new or bare softwood surfaces

Cleanup: mineral spirits or paint thinner, following manufacturer’s safety
instructions
Coverage: 125 sq. ft. per quart
Coats: normally 1, but additional coats may be applied on highly absorbent
woods
Recommended uses: any soft or porous woods - common examples include pine,
fir and spruce (soft) or maple, alder and aspen (porous)
FAQ:
Q. What is the purpose of Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner?
Much of the wood used for projects is "soft" wood, such as pine or spruce.
Some hardwoods, such as alder or aspen, are porous and tend to absorb stain
unevenly. To help ensure even stain color penetration and beautiful results,
it is essential to pre-treat soft or porous woods with Minwax® Pre-Stain
Wood Conditioner.
Q. How does Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner work?
Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner penetrates the pores of the wood,
reducing the amount of stain the larger pores will absorb. This evens out
the absorption of stain, preventing streaking and blotching.
Q. Can Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner be used on hardwoods such as oak
or mahogany?
Yes, but more dramatic results will be seen on softwoods. Hardwoods tend to
have a more uniform pore structure than softwoods, resulting in more uniform
staining. Exceptions include maple, alder and aspen, which have uneven pore
structures. Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner should be used on these woods.
Q. What happens to Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner after two hours have
elapsed?
The resins in Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner will begin to dry and may
inhibit stain absorption. To open the pores again, sand the wood lightly
with a medium grit (#120 - #180) sandpaper.
Q. Does Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner need to be sanded before stain is
applied?
No. Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is not a sanding sealer and does not
require this extra step as long as the stain is applied within 2 hours after
pretreatment.
Q. Is it possible to apply too much Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner?
No, not if label instructions are followed and any excess Minwax® Pre-Stain
Wood Conditioner is wiped off after 5 - 15 minutes.
Q. Can Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner be used prior to applying a
water-based stain?
No. Since Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is an oil-based product, it
should only be used as a pre-stain treatment with oil-based stains such as
Minwax® Wood Finish™ stains. For water-based stains, use Minwax® Water Based
Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner.
DIRECTIONS:
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may
generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may
cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children
or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous
substances requires the use of proper protective equipment such as a
properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and
cleanup.
Apply before staining on clean, raw wood, using a brush or cloth.
Allow to penetrate for 5 to 15 minutes, then remove excess with clean, dry
cloth.
The stain should be applied within two hours of application of Minwax®

FAQ:
Q. What is the purpose of Minwax® Water Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner?
Water-based stains react differently to wood than do oil-based stains. When

Minwax® Water Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. Minwax® Water Based
Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner helps promote even stain penetration and reduces
the effect of grain raising.

after it dries?
Yes. Sanding will smooth out any grain that was raised during the
application of the Conditioner.
Q. Can Minwax® Water Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner be used prior to an

No. For oil based stains such as Minwax® Wood Finish™ Stain and Minwax® Gel
