Born in June 26, 1831 in Meteghan, Jean-Pierre was a well known businessman. The "Lowell's Canadian Dominion Directory of 1871" records him among the farmers of the area. In 1867, he started his first sawmill. Information is scant as to its location, and how it was operated. However, we use this sawmill as the foundation for what was to become U.J. Robichaud. From the 1871 Census data, we recognize Jean-Pierre as a land owner with income coming from rents, farming, fishing and a water powered saw mill. (Click here to view Census data) In 1882, Jean-Pierre and his two sons, Élisée and Jean decided to build a second mill across from their home. In 1885, the Robichaud mill made windows and benches for the church that was being built in Meteghan. We have within our archives, the very patterns that were used in 1885 to construct these pews. In 2008, Jean-Pierre's house still stands across the street from U.J. Robichaud. It is currently painted blue. Over the years, the house has been the property of many people, but in 1989, it was bought by Camille Robichaud (the Fourth Generation), bringing it back within the Robichaud family. Want even more?
