In April 1997,
Giant Factories Inc. took a giant technological leap forward to help
preserve our precious environment when we became the world’s first major
water heater manufacturer to insulate its water heaters with Eco-friendly
water-blown insulation.
Up until then,
we had been using fiberglass exclusively to insulate our water heaters.
While we continue to insulate some of our water heaters with fiberglass as
it is also eco-friendly, it does have its limitations when used as an
insulating material.
After
searching all over the world, we found a way around these limitations.
This water blown foam insulation has great insulating qualities, is
environmentally safe (contains no CFC’s or HCFC’s) and is totally
recyclable.
Damage to the
ozone layer is of a particular concern to Giant. The ozone layer is the
best natural defense for mankind against ultra-violet rays that can cause
certain types of cancer. When water heaters are recycled for their steel,
the insulating foam is crushed into flakes, an action that releases HCFC’s
into the atmosphere. These HCFC molecules attack the ozone layer reducing
its capacity to filter ultra-violet rays. As the movement to ban HCFC’s
progresses, it will become harder for consumers to dispose of products
that contain HCFC’s. Eventually, landfill sites will refuse to accept
these products and other methods of disposal that release even more HCFC’s
into the atmosphere, such as incineration will have to be used.
Giant has
always been and will continue to be a responsible corporate citizen. The
introduction of water blown foam insulation is another example of Giant
Factories on-going commitment to bring to the water heater market products
that are environmentally safe as well as giving excellent quality, best
value, and top energy efficiency.
